Choosing a Good Domain Name

« Back to Blog

Domain names are hostnames that allow us to remember websites more easily than using an IP address. So, for example, instead of having to remember 10.1.1.11 to come to this website, instead you can simply remember webpageone.co.uk.

Domain names are allowed to have letters, digits, and hyphens. No other characters may be used in a domain name.

Domain Name Types

co.uk – the standard UK domain name suffix (essential).
com – the most popular domain suffix on earth (essential).
org – organisational domain suffix, global.
net – short for ‘network’, but used by a variety of websites.
org.uk – used by organisations such as charities.
plc.uk – used for UK public limited companies.
info – a new domain suffix, short for information provider.
me.uk – individual domain name suffix.
ltd.uk – used for UK limited companies.
biz – relatively new domain, a shortened version of ‘business’.
tv – unsurprisingly, short for “television” – used by many broadcasters.
eu – European Union suffix.
mobi – For sites delivering services to mobile devices

As far as we’re concerned, the most important domain types for businesses in the UK are .com and .co.uk.

Domain name registration is a necessary, easy, and strategically important first step in establishing an online presence, whether for business or otherwise. A well-chosen domain name can set you up for success in so many ways, the most prominent of these being increased search engine traffic.
